Things You Need To Know About Flying With Weed Vapes In Canada

What is a Vape Pen?

A vape pen is an electronic device that heats a liquid containing cannabinoids and terpenes to produce vapor for inhalation. This vapor delivers the active ingredients into the bloodstream, providing the effects and benefits of cannabis. Vape pens have four main components: the battery, coil, tank, and mouthpiece.

These devices come in various styles and materials, such as metal, glass, plastic, quartz, and ceramic. In Canada, the legality of bringing a metal weed vape on a plane depends on the type of vape – disposable or non-disposable. Disposable vapes are used until the liquid runs out and are then disposed of, while non-disposable vapes can be reused with refillable cartridges and rechargeable batteries.

Do Weed Vapes Have A Flavor?

Weed vaporizers heat cannabis flower to create vapor for inhalation, which differs from burning it like a joint or blunt. While vaping does produce a weed smell, it is not as potent or long-lasting as smoking. The scent from a weed vape pen dissipates quickly and is usually gone by the time you finish vaping.

The type of vaporizer used can also affect the strength and duration of the smell, with dab rigs having the most lingering odor, followed by dry herb vaporizers and dab/wax pens, while oil cartridges produce a mild scent that fades rapidly.

Vapes with terpenes emit stronger scents than those with pure THC distillate. Vaping weed allows for discreet consumption as the aroma is subtle, doesn’t linger, and doesn’t create visible smoke.

Can You Bring Weed On A Plane In Canada?

Since the legalization of cannabis in 2018, individuals of legal age are permitted to transport it across provincial borders in Canada using various modes of transportation such as air, road, and train.

However, there are stringent regulations and legal obligations to adhere to when traveling with cannabis, particularly when flying. It is possible to bring cannabis on a plane, but there are important factors to take into account, such as the minimum age requirement of the province being visited.

Additionally, it is crucial to be aware of possession limits for different cannabis products, regulations pertaining to the specific type of product being transported, and to consult with the carrier before traveling.

Can Bring Weed Vape on a Plane in Canada?

As per the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), weed vape pens, electronic cigarettes, and e-cigarette accessories are allowed on airplanes for personal use, as long as they adhere to possession limits. These devices must be switched off during the flight and cannot be used on the plane or in the airport.

Typically, you can pack your vape in your carry-on luggage, but it is recommended to confirm with your airline if you can bring weed vapes in checked baggage. If your weed vaporizer has a detachable battery, you can remove the battery and store the device in your carry-on bag.

Things you need to know before taking weed on a plane

Liquids, aerosols and gels LAGs restrictions

Certain types of cannabis products are subject to restrictions when it comes to carrying them in carry-on luggage.

According to CATSA, items like tinctures, vapes, topicals, and oils must be in containers that are 100ml or smaller. These containers need to be placed in a single clear 1-litre resealable bag. If a container has a capacity exceeding 100ml, it must be packed in checked baggage, even if the actual contents are less than 100ml.

Legal age in the province you are visiting

The Cannabis Act permits individuals who are 18 years or older to purchase, consume, and distribute cannabis among other adults, but the legal age varies by province.

In most provinces, the minimum age for cannabis use is 19, except in Alberta where it is 18 and in Quebec where it is 21. This means that it would be against the law for a 19-year-old to transport cannabis from British Columbia to Quebec.

Medical cannabis limits

Patients using medical cannabis are permitted to have larger amounts in their possession compared to individuals using marijuana for recreational purposes.

Medical patients can possess up to 150 grams or a 30-day supply of dried cannabis, whichever is less, in addition to the 30-gram limit for personal use. However, when traveling with medical marijuana, individuals must be prepared to demonstrate their legal authorization to possess more than 30 grams.

Possession restrictions

According to the Cannabis Act, any individual of legal age can have up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in public for recreational use. The allowed limit varies based on the type of cannabis product being consumed.

For instance, adults can now have up to 17.1 liters of cannabis beverages in public for personal consumption. Additionally, adults can possess up to 450 grams of edibles, but if the edibles have a gel-like consistency, they are limited to 100ml or less in carry-on luggage.

Can only fly with cannabis on domestic flights

It is against the law to transport marijuana across international borders into or out of Canada. Similarly, carrying cannabis on flights to US states where it is legal is also prohibited. Violators may incur significant fines or imprisonment if caught with marijuana at the border.
